Yahoo! has acquired Associated Content -- a freelance local news and opinion site -- with hopes of expanding its audience and bringing a more "folksy" feel to the site. Yahoo! plans on "sprinkling" Associated Content throughout its site.
Founded in 2005, "The People's Media," as Associated Content refers to itself, is a user-generated content site with nearly 3 million reports written, filmed, and otherwise contributed by users. Users are paid either by pageviews or by taking assigned tasks.
Yahoo! is reported to have paid between $90 and $100 million for the site.
