So I tried yet again to simply up the RAM in the refurbished desktop and now it turns on but refuses to boot. When I originally installed the "new" RAM, it beeped six times and flashed red instead of green. Now, however, it flashes green and turns on okay, it just doesn't boot - the monitor doesn't even try to come on.
Also, I changed the background to something more manageable. I really liked the old one but it's still around (in a manner of speaking) - it's the favicon up top. Like everything else, this will take some time to get used to and work with and may not even end up being the background we decide to go with but, for now, I like how it looks and feels and I'm going to see how it does.
