Microsoft announced that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been downloaded at least 1,000,000 times since it debuted Wednesday. Windows 8 is a dramatic departure from previous versions of the operating system, as it seems to be doing away with the Desktop, which doesn't work on tablets and phones. It has been replaced by Metro, a touch-friendly application that allows you to access programs, modules, and other applications (including Desktop, which is now just another program). If there is an easy way to boot directly into Desktop, some people familiar with the new OS say they have not discovered it.
Microsoft hopes Windows 8 will provide a platform for the Android and bring Windows to tablets and phones to provide competition for the iPhone, iPad, and Google's new OS. The Windows 8 Developers' Preview clocked some 3,000,000 downloads.
