A spokesperson for the Vatican admitted that www.vatican.xxx is unavailable, but denied that the Vatican itself had purchased it. As reported before, many people and institutions are buying-up .xxx domains to avoid their misuse. It appears the Vatican was beaten to the punch by an unknown domain holder.
