Wal-Mart has decided to close its online MP3 store on August 29th, according to several news outlets. While Wal-Mart's online music store launched in 2003, it officially opened in March, 2004 but only sold music in Windows Media Player's .WMV format. While tracks were only 88¢ each, they could not be used by all devices.
It was not until 2007 that Wal-Mart began selling MP3 and other compatible formats, making it an option for iPod and Apple-brand devices users. This was the same year Amazon opened its online music store, and Wal-Mart has simply not been able to compete in the crowded market.
