AOL announced that it has licensed 800 of its patents to Microsoft for a reported $1.06 billion. AOL will have licensing rights to use these patents, and retains another 300 or more patents related to search, social networking, and more. AOL is said to be sharing the return from the sale with shareholders. Its stock went up 35% once the news was released.
