School districts in several US states are setting forth guidelines for social networking and Web use amongst teachers, at the risk of their jobs. Due to recent stories in which teachers are alleged to have developed unhealthy relationships with students, as well as insulted and demeaned them (individually and/or as a whole), some districts feel it necessary to limit their employees' freedom of speech.
Precious snowflakes aside, some teachers agree with the idea, noting that they are government employees and communications between themselves, parents, and students is in fact part and parcel of their responsibilities. Whether or not the changes will have a positive or negative effect remains to be seen, as no "official" guidelines have been set.
