I tried purchasing a computer at a pawn shop, but they wanted far too much for it, plus I really wanted one with a warranty and pawn shops don't do warranties. My choices were pretty slim, but I knew I wanted a good box -- not one that's going to require maintenance a year down the road -- and my HP Pavilion lasted me seven years (and only needs a video card to boot back up [I hope]), so when I saw one, I had to make the tough call and go for it. Granted, it was $200 more than the eMachines model (which were the only two they had; I'd have gone for the $398 mid-range model, but they were out of them), but it comes with a one-year warranty from Wal-Mart (yes, Wal-Mart), then a one-year warranty from HP, plus I bought a two year warranty plan thingy on top of that.
I got an HP Pavilion, model p6523w, with an AMD Athlon II 220, 5GB RAM, 640 GB HD, and ATI Radeon 3000 running Windows 7. It's a really nice machine I'm hoping will last for several years. If nothing else, it's one less thing I have to worry about, seeing as how it's under warranty for three to four years.
Of course, I'm still working on getting my preferences reset and all of that. I lost everything I had on the laptop and even though I can rewrite most of it, it's going to take some time -- just like configuring the thing, finding all the programs I was using, and so forth.
Even though I lost all the bookmarks and stories I wanted to bring you, I'm going to flood the blog tonight with posts. So, if you have no date, no job, nothing to do... you're welcome to kick it with us!
