While DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) has been available in Norway since 1995 and DAB+ since 2007, the country still hosts five FM radio stations. As of 2017, that number will drop to zero as Norway closes all FM radio broadcasting stations and moves to DAB.
According to reports, FM radio broadcasting costs up to eight times more than DAB, which already hosts more than 20 radio stations and can host up to 20 more. Other European countries have similar bills on the table but Norway is the first to finalize a date for ending national FM radio broadcasting, which is 2017.
