Do Not Track Me Online Act of 2011

Rep. Jackie Speier (D) of California is sponsoring the Do Not Track Me Online Act of 2011, which would function the way the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry does. Advertisers and companies that fail to comply would face legal repercussions for 'deceptive practices.' The Federal Trade Commission called attention to the issue in December, 2010.

Both Microsoft and Mozilla (Firefox) announced that their browsers will integrate "Do Not Track" options. Firefox 4.0 Beta is said to have this option built-in. The primary purpose of this is to dissuade advertisers.
