Sony has announced that it will end its floppy disk production in the Spring of 2011, due to a lack of demand. Sony is one of the few companies in Japan which still produces the floppy disk, which has already been abandoned by most users. Few newer computers are manufactured with a floppy disk drive, though home users can still add one, if they have one.
2009's market was a mere 12 million disks, of which Sony made about 70%. The corporation noted that those who still use floppy disks are mainly in the education and research sectors.
