Boy in China Sells Kidney for iPad

A 17-year-old Chinese boy sold one of his kidneys for about $5,000 to buy an iPad. The boy, who has not been identified, is now suffering from complications related to his decision and the surgery that followed. Five people throughout Southern China have been charged with intentional injury and illegal organ trading over the incident, including the surgeon who performed the operation.

Authorities say the boy is from one of the poorest provinces in China, and that they do not know who paid for or received the kidney. Illegal organ trading has become a booming business in China, as demand for the organs exceeds their supply. The boy is said to have been approached in an online chatroom.
