Online Impersonations Now Illegal in Cali

SB 1411 has gone into effect, making it illegal in California to impersonate another person online. Free Speech advocates denounced the law, but proponents say most cybercrime goes unpunished and this law will help stop that, giving victims some recourse and forcing criminals to take responsibility for their actions.

In effect, SB 1411 will be used to combat online fraud, but temperamental celebrities may try to exploit it to their own ends. The general reaction to Ricky Gervais' softball lampooning at the Golden Globes is an example of just how hyper-sensitive today's "stars" have become.
