Prepaid Cellphones to Require ID?

Lawmakers have proposed a bill which forces prepaid cellphone users to show ID at the time of purchase. According to legal experts, prepaid phones are preferred by criminals and terrorists. Some users may balk, as they use prepaid plans because they lack the funds to sign-up to a plan which can be as long as three years. Many also prefer the anonymity prepaid phones offer, sometimes to avoid bill collectors and others. Few have complained so far, though.

Experts say the need for the law outweighs innocent citizens' concerns, and registration is already required in nine or more of the 24 countries comprising the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development. Several states have similar laws.
