Twitter Acquires SMS Infrastructure

Twitter's been making some moves here, lately, but the acquisition of Cloudhopper, a mobile-based texting infrastructure, is perhaps the most newsworthy. Twitter intends to employ the SMS (Short Message Service) to improve its reach. Twitter blogged that it has been working with Cloudhopper for the last eight months, but did not provide details.

Twitter - a SMS - handles close to one billion SMS each month, and that number is growing daily! The 140-character length of Tweets was inspired by mobile SMS. Earlier this month, Twitter acquired Atebits, the company which developed the Tweetie iPhone app for Twits.
